President said he plans to end the use of mercury, a highly toxic substance used in this type of exploration.

 

President Jair Bolsonaro said on Sunday that the government would send Congress a bill to legalize gold mining in the country and said the proposal should ban the use of mercury in this type of activity.

 

The president gave the information when he arrived at Palácio da Alvorada and met some people waiting for him at the entrance of the official residence. Faced with a group from Pará, Bolsonaro said it would legalize the mining.

 

Asked by journalists if he would in fact legalize the activity, he replied that he intends to send a bill to Congress on the matter. “I will not legalize. We are going to come up with a project to legalize it, the government will come in, ”he said.

 

The president said he intends to end the use of mercury, a highly toxic substance used in this type of exploration. "The prospector is a citizen who deserves respect, consideration and obviously we will marry the exploration with the environmental issue and put an end to mercury," he said.

The president did not give details of the proposal nor when he intends to send it to Congress.
